Opening Day – Las Vegas Tsunami

Hello, and welcome to The Dugs. I’m going to get this serious business out of the way right up front, because it’s important. And because if I post this early enough, there’s a good enough chance our fan base isn’t the monolith that it will surely become, and therefore less people will see me being a sissy.

I love baseball. I love it. I love when pitchers and catchers report to Spring training. I love the first pre-season game. I love the fact that I get 162 games of it a year, and that numbers can be turned over and over and over and can lead to hour long conversations.

Because I love it, I owe something to baseball, and everyone who plays it. While this goes for all the wonderful and exciting things that has happened, it also goes for the ugliness and the debacles: A-Rod and the steroids, Pete Rose and the gambling, Marc McGwire and the steroids, making “superballs” during the Great Depression, Jason Giambi and the steroids.

It’s all baseball, and I owe it big time.

So when I answer the question, “What is your comic about?” and I tell them, “It’s a satirical baseball cartoon,” most people assume I am trying to skewer the subject, and the players I portray.

Nah.

I write what I write because it makes me laugh. Truth be told, I owe anyone I write about big time.

Unless they play for the White Sox. Then, they’re an asshole.
